I’m writing this on my iMac, one of the four Apple devices in the house. I’ve been using Apple computers since 1994 when I got a 6100/60. I made my first sale of Mac software in 2001. Apple has come a long way in the ten years since under Steve’s leadership.

I upgraded my iMac from 2GB to 3GB so I could install Lion. My iMac is a late 2006 model Core 2 Duo at 2.16 GHz.

Two original 1GB DIMMS with one removed (Samsung).

New memory inserted.

Reboot with 3GB RAM

Nice catch from MacDailyNews: as of the close of market today, Apple is worth more than Microsoft and Intel combined. And some tasty claim chowder on this Bill Gates quote from June 1998, regarding Steve Jobs’s return to Apple as CEO:

“What I can’t figure out is why he [Steve Jobs] is even trying? He knows he can’t win.”

According to Wolfram Alpha, using their mean market caps for the entire month of June 1998 (it was a volatile month amidst the boom), the Wintel combination was worth $339 billion, vs. $3.5 billion for Apple. Put another way, Microsoft and Intel combined were worth 96 times more than Apple then. Since then, you get this.

The iPad only does less than a regular computer to us geeks. To
everyone else, it does more. This is what Motorola and Google and
Samsung and BlackBerry and everyone else, with the sole exception
of Apple, do not get about “open” computing.

My old chair was manufactured in 1997 (it says so on the inspection label pasted under the seat) and I must have had it since not long after that. The padding on the seat had compressed and the gas lift was sticking. Time for a replacement

My ISP recently notified me that my ADSL was getting a free upgrade to ADLS2+ sometime between February and April. This was good news apart from the fact that my existing modem/router was so old that it didn’t do ADSL2+ It was a DrayTek 2600We that had been running pretty much 24/7 without problems since November 2002 when I first got ADSL. It also only supported WEP on the wireless LAN so that was a bit obsolete.

Today my new modem/router/firewall/wireless access point arrived and was quickly installed ready for my line upgrade.

Big box.

Littler box inside.

Neat and tidy. Template for drilling holes for wall-mounting.

Curvy.

Screws and plugs for wallmounting and a pad of DrayTek post-its included.

Light compact switching power supply.

Set up and running. Now I get wireless on the other side of the house too
